Ryley Monaghan is the founder and owner of Oak Angel Builders, a premier custom home-building company based in Charleston, South Carolina. With a diverse background spanning construction and culinary arts, Ryley brings a unique perspective and dedication to craftsmanship to every project.
From Construction to Culinary Arts and Back Again
Raised in sunny Florida, Ryley started working as a construction laborer and carpenter in his high school years. He attended Florida State University, earning a degree in business entrepreneurship before following his passion for cooking.
In the early 2000s, Ryley moved to Charleston, SC, where he began his culinary career at Zinc Bistro in Mount Pleasant. He quickly rose through the ranks, holding positions such as:
- Junior Culinary Manager at Charleston Place Hotel (2006)
- Executive Sous Chef at The Sanctuary Hotel on Kiawah Island (2007)
- Executive Chef for the Kessler Collection’s Grand Bohemian Hotel Charleston (2015)
- Executive Sous Chef at The Dewberry Hotel (2017)
Throughout his culinary career, Ryley was a driving force in Charleston’s vibrant food scene. A gold medal-winning culinarian, he participated in dozens of local and national events, including the Charleston Wine and Food Festival, March of Dimes, and James Beard Award Dinners.

In 2018, Ryley made the bold decision to resign from The Dewberry Hotel and pursue his true passion: construction. He founded Oak Angel Builders and JZI Lumber, showcasing his commitment to crafting custom homes with sustainable materials and locally milled lumber.
